Karate for Kids

Karate is a great activity for children of all ages as it helps to build self-confidence whilst improving coordination, self-discipline, balance and fitness. At MK Shotokan Karate Academy we provide a safe and supportive environment where children can also learn self-defence and conflict avoidance techniques.

Research has shown that karate is an effective tool for improving children’s ability to engage in goal-oriented behaviour, performing independent, self-organised and goal directed actions. These skills will help to improve concentration and focus leading to improved performance at school.

At MK Shotokan Karate Academy classes are run in our own dojo by our professional instructors, who have many years of experience and are fully DBS checked. Children will enjoy our safe and welcoming dojo which has a matted floor and training aids on hand. There is a viewing area where parents can watch classes if they want to (although some children can find this distracting).

We welcome students of all abilities and backgrounds to join our Kids’ Karate classes. These lessons are specifically structured for young children from 5 to 11 years of age. On a Tuesday we run a slightly shorter class for 4 - 7 year olds to introduce them to martial arts. They are also welcome to come along to our training sessions (with or without a parent) during the week. All students new to Shotokan Karate start with a white belt and can progress all the way up to black belt. Our Thursday Kids’ Karate class aims to help students who are working towards their red, yellow and higher belts. We aim to hold regular gradings every couple of months, so that children and their parents can see their progress. Over time, those wanting to compete will have the option to attend regional, national and ultimately international competitions.

Participation in karate encourages children to interact with others of different ages and abilities outside of the school environment.

Your first lesson is free, so if you are interested, please get in touch with Keith.
